200 Enrolled as Advocates

KAMPALA: At least 205 lawyers were this week enrolled as advocates of the High Court in ceremonies that took two days.

On day one, 101 lawyers were enrolled as advocates while on day two 105 were enrolled.

The in ceremonies presided over by the Chief Registrar, HW Esta Nambayo and Registrar High Court, HW Tom Chemutai at the Judiciary Headquarters.

Representatives from the Law Council and Uganda Law Society witnessed the enrollment ceremonies.

The Chief Registrar congratulated the advocates for reaching this landmark in their lives and urged them to embrace Alternative Dispute Resolution.

She emphasized to the new officers of court that where they have grievances with courts, they should follow the legal system by reporting anomalies to the Inspectorate of Courts or Judicial Service Commission.

She further asked the new advocates to live ethically and observe discipline in their careers. "Ensure discipline and integrity as you go out into the field," she said. Adding that they should continue studying and learning in order to give back to society.

Mr Aaron Motooka Bageya, a representative of the Secretary from the Law Council, urged the new advocates to ensure professionalism, observance of ethics and rule of law in work and lifestyle.

He warned the advocates against misleading court, fraudulent conduct and delay in prosecuting matters. He also cautioned them against financial misconduct and fraud in land transactions. Mr Motooka instead advised them to be innovative and defend the legal profession at all times.

He also reminded them of the Law Council's mandate to discipline errant advocates.

The new court officers were warned not to appear before the High Court until their probational nine-month period is complete.

On his part, Mr Bernard Oundo the Chairperson of the ULS Strategic Mobilization Committee, urged the new advocates to be devoted to learning new areas in law and practice. He urged them to actively participate in ULS activities and take interest in their reputation and ethics that govern the legal profession.

The new advocates on their part pledged to lead exemplary lives and to uphold the rule of law.
